Skin Care for Men: What a Regular Guy Needs To Know

Guys, let’s face it. You care about how you look. You do take care and groom yourselves, but is it straightforward and easy?

Putting on masks, serums, or toners every day is something you don't really need. All of those things do help, but they’re more for the enthusiasts out there. What you need are uncomplicated, high quality products that suits your skin type, addresses your skin concerns and blends right in to your lifestyle.

So, here are a few simple skin care tips that you can perform daily - most likely before going out and before going to bed. We do recommend committing to memory and practicing these for a healthier skin.

But seriously, don’t let these tips intimidate you… a little tweaking can make you look years younger, and for the long haul.

1. Know your skin type

We can’t stress enough how vital knowing your skin type is. To identify and understand, you may refer to this:

  • Sensitive skin may sting or burn after product use

  • Normal skin is clear and not sensitive

  • Dry skin is flaky, itchy or rough

  • Oily skin is shiny and greasy

  • Combination skin is dry in some areas and oily in others

Understanding your skin type will help you learn how to take care of your skin and select skin care products that are right for you.

2. Wash your face with a good cleanser

Every man's face has its own unique quirks, and the same can be said for cleansers. This will make or break your skin care routine. It’s not so much that having a good cleanser can do miracles to your skin. It’s the wrong cleanser that you should be wary of.

Make sure that the cleanser that you’re using or going to use isn’t too stripping of the needed moisture. It can leave you with dry, irritated or sensitive skin. Don’t use it if it’s too rich as well. "Nourishing" cleansers may seem like a great idea to prevent dry skin—but certain ingredients actually make skin even drier by forming a seal that interferes with the skin's natural regeneration process.

Clearly, there's lots that can go wrong! Choosing the right cleanser is not easy, but hopefully, these will help.

3. Cleanse twice daily

When you wash your face, you remove dirt, muck and excess oil that has settled inside your pores and on top of your skin. This will prevent clogged pores, breakouts and minimize shine. Another reason is because your skin needs to be clean and clear before you put any product on it.

Do cleanse when you wake up-to clean the grime you accumulated while you slept (since your pilllowcase is a hotbed of bacteria, which we’ll discuss on a different article). And then, once again before going to bed, to get rid of everything you got throughout the day.

4. Shaving is also a factor of your overall appearance

Fact: Shaving dry will hurt your skin. This can cause friction for the blade, and lead to multiple passes with the razor that will increase the chances of cuts, acne and ingrown hair. Even slapping some shaving cream on alone won’t do. Get wet instead, and your skin will thank you. We suggest that you shave in the shower or immediately after.

5. Never go outside without applying sunscreen

Spending most of your day outside means your skin needs a little more care and protection. Even on cloudy days when the sun is not shining brightly, UV rays can still pass through the clouds. These UV rays lead to sun spots, wrinkles, sun burns, dry patches and more. It’s important to shield your skin from these rays with SPF.

If you’re only outside during your commute or a quick lunch, then a lightweight SPF should suffice, but if you hit the beach or are outside in direct light for extended periods of time (an hour or more), then you should consider something higher—SPF 30 is a safe bet. Stay forever young (or close to it) by applying sunscreen every single day.
